Zelens Power D: Review

8:06:00 PM

I was reluctant to get the Zelens Power D High Potency Provitamin D when it first came out. I finally caved in and I'm quite glad I did. Zelens released three Power oils-Power A, Power C and Power D. I have been playing with Power A and D. Details per Zelens:

A high potency concentrate rich in provitamin D and bio-mimetic lipids structurally similar to those found in the skin, fortified with a proprietary botanical complex containing powerful plant sterols (precursors of Vitamin D). Formulated to deliver multiple skincare benefits, this unprecedented, lipid-replenishing treatment helps to restore the skin’s natural barrier and build skin’s resilience. Protects skin against environmental aggressors and strengthens skin’s resistance to stressed conditions. Leaves skin replumped, supple, protected and healthy-looking.

Vitamin D is involved in differentiation and regulation of growth of keratinocytes, enhances expression of proteins involved in barrier function, and demonstrates protective effect against microbial attack, environmental aggressors and stressed conditions.

  • Replenishes lipids and fortifies skin barrier function
  • Helps build skin's resilience
  • Protects skin against environmental aggressors and stressed conditions
Power D comes in a nice frosted glass bottle with a dropper. I use about 3 drops on my face at night. I put it on over my serums but under my moisturizer. It has a dry oil texture so it's not as greasy as I thought it would be. It's definitely a lighter face oil. However, it is not a serum in any aspect. It has no strong scent.

This is definitely a comforting product. There's no irritation or any adverse effects from using such as break outs. It's hydrating without being too much. Great for winter and night use for me. If you have dry skin you could use this day, night and year round. If you live in a hot humid climate like me it might be too much for you during the summer or day. I think you're going to have to use your best judgment on use for your climate/season/skin type. You could use it twice a day year round if you wanted to.

Overall, my skin feels very calm and all around fabulous when I use this. I would use this in place of a face oil. It's packed full of beneficial skin care ingredients. You couldn't ask for a better facial oil. It lives up to it's claims. You can find it in the US at Barney's and Space NK. It's available also at Beauty Bay, Selfridges and Cult Beauty online. However, Cult Beauty no longer ships Zelens to the US, but those of you outside the US can find it there.

Active Ingredients:

Provitamin D (7-Dehydrocholesterol): This active ingredient is the most important molecule in the synthesis of vitamin D. 7-Dehydrocholesterol is naturally present in the stratum spinosum and stratum basale of the epidermis as a precursor of Vitamin D. Under the influence of sunlight 7-dehydrocholesterol in the epidermis is converted to vitamin D3.

Phospholipids: Major building components in the structure of any cellular membrane essential for all vital physiological processes. These natural skin-identical ingredients demonstrate moisturizing, restructuring and protective properties.

Sterol complex: A blend of vegetable-derived esters structurally similar to skin lipids. Demonstrates moisturizing, conditioning and repairing properties. Reinforces skin barrier function.
Sphingolipids: Lipid molecules with strengthening, restructuring, repairing and moisturizing properties. Reinforce skin’s barrier function, improve skin elasticity and demonstrate soothing and softening properties.
Omega-3 and Omega-6: Essential fatty acids derived from safflower oil. Help restore and maintain lipid barrier function and balance the moisture of the skin. Omega acids act as skin protectors and revitalisers.
Soybean sterols: Phytosterols derived from soybeans are lipid molecules with strong biomimetic and soothing properties. Structurally similar to skin natural lipids, these sterols moisturise skin, reduce water loss and strengthen natural barrier function.

Glycolipids: Lipid molecules analogous to the intercellular lipids of stratum corneum (SC) demonstrate structuring, repairing and protective properties. Strengthen the barrier function and hydro-retaining capacity of skin.
Proprietary botanical complex: A unique blend of botanical extracts rich in plant sterols which play an important role as precursors of vitamin D. This blend contains 3 different types of mushrooms (Shitake, Reishi, Portobello), lichen and plankton.
Tripeptide: This potent peptide stimulates natural collagen production. It activates Keratinocyte Growth Factor (KGF), one of key players in modulating tissue repair and remodeling.
Chondroitin sulfate: A natural molecule present in connective tissue cross-linking with the collagen. Demonstrates firming properties to give the matrix a distinct 3D structure.

Hyaluronic acid: An important natural component of skin. Zelens uses a low-molecular weight hyaluronic acid (HA) with unique moisturizing properties. HA improves skin moisture, helps to retain and maintain skin elasticity and reduces the appearance of wrinkles.
Yeast: A natural extract from the live yeast cells (Saccharomyces Cerevisiae). Increases cell respiration and metabolism, stimulates oxygen consumption and helps tissue repair and wound healing. Demonstrates anti-inflammatory and protective properties.
Vitamin E: An antioxidant with a key role in the protection of cellular membranes from free radicals. It is the major antioxidant in the human epidermis with strong protective effects against UV-induced skin damage.

Corn oil: Rich in omega-6. Demonstrates excellent moisturizing and conditioning properties.
Geranium oil: An essential oil extracted from the plant Rose geranium. This oil possesses antioxidant and antiseptic properties. It helps to balance the secretion of sebum and clear oily skins. Traditionally it has been used for years to help healing of wounds, burns and ulcers.
